When I started teaching full time I considered myself “Semi retired” from freelance illustration. Today I did my first illustration in a long time. For about 10 straight years I did illustrations for the Playboy Jazz festival. The Art Director is Fred Fehlau and he is also the Department Chairman of foundation studies up at Art Center. I just started a 2 term sabbatical from Art Center (I’ve been teaching there for over 16 years) and I thought it would be nice to try to help Fred out as I begin my time away. It’s been several years since my last illustration for Playboy Jazz and it was fun doing this portrait of Benny Golson. -Bob

Wow Bob, that is really nice. Is it all done in ink? It’s nice to see you illustrating again
Thanks Nic. It’s ink and brush on paper. -Bob

Bob! I’m so glad to see you drawing, this is a great illustration, every mark is expressive. Semi-retired? What!
Thanks Lois. I’m semi retired in that I am no longer promoting myself as a freelance illustrator. When I freelaced full time I spent a percentage of income and a lot of time promoting myself. I had to take on a certain amount of work to make it worth my while. In the years since I stopped promoting myself as a freelance illustrator the calls have trickled off. I still get the occasional call, but I usually refer a friend or former student. My time and energy now goes into things like The Drawing Club. -Bob
beautiful work. Your gnomon tutorials are very helpful. We hope for more video-tutorials.
Thanks Artymorty. I’m glad to hear that the DVDs are helping you out. Remember that the DVDs were designed to show basic ways of looking at a problem and solving it. The fun part is to allow yourself to show through the process. Whatever “Techniques” I show or use can be interpreted in many ways and in any media. I’ll keep you all posted if I come up with some new ideas. -Bob
